the historic yamase building

The Yamase Building, located at 4493 Moana Rd., was built around 1919 by Japanese temple architect Jitsaturo Murakami for Seiichi Yamase. Its original tenant was the Japanese Savings and Loan.  Waimea's first streetlight, in 1921, was under the eaves of the Yamase building.  It is the only structure of its kind in Hawai'i, and is listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places since 1996.

Yamase Building Today

As shown above, the Annex of the Yamase building was located on Moana Rd., to the south of the main building, until Hurricane Iniki destroyed it in 1992.
In 1995, a replicate Annex was built, to the west of the main building, which was renovated the same year.
Today, the Yamase Building is comprised of five rental apartments and three commercial tenants - Subway Sandwich Shop, Makai Realty and OneTrust Mortgage.
